Welcome to Ahmadi Answers

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long-awaited Messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) (1835-1908) of Qadian. Ahmad(as) claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus(as) of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad(saw). We believe that according to the Qur’an and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad(saw) it is clear that the latter day messiah would be an imam from amongst the Muslims. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believes that God sent Ahmad(as), like Jesus(as), to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and re-institute morality, justice and peace. Ahmad(as)’s advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival. He divested Islam of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings.

If Isa(as) Died, Why Can’t He Come Back?

Allah can do anything He wants but never would He go against His words of the Qur’an in which He clearly has stated that once a person dies never do they return.

Firstly Allah clearly states that there is a barrier until the day of resurrection after one dies:

Until, when death comes to one of them, he says entreating, ‘My Lord, send me back,That I may do righteous deeds in the life that I have left behind.’ Never, it is but a word that he utters. And behind them is a barrier until the day when they shall be raised again.(Chapter 23, Verse 100-101)

Allah also states showing us No one will return after death:

And it is an inviolable law for a township which We have destroyed that they shall not return.(Chapter 21 Verse 96)

Allah Again Has Stated:

“Or lest it should say, when it sees the punishment, ‘Would that there were for me a return to the world, I would then be among those who do good!’”God will answer, ‘Aye, there came to thee My Signs, but thou didst treat them as lies, and thou wast arrogant, and thou wast of the disbelievers.’(Chapter 39 Verses 59-60)

Again Allah Explains:

How can you disbelieve in Allah? When you were without life, He gave you life, and then He will cause you to die, then restore you to life, and then to Him shall you be made to return.(Chapter 2 Verse 29)

Allah Further States:

Say, ‘It is Allah Who gives you life, then causes you to die; then He will gather you together unto the Day of Resurrection about which there is no doubt. But most men know not.’(Chapter 45 Verse 27)

Allah Has beautifully explained all our life cycles. He states:

He said, ‘Therein shall you live, and therein shall you die, and therefrom shall you be brought forth.’(Chapter 7 Verse 26)

Allah has made it clear by stating the same for Isa(as) himself:

‘And peace was on me the day I was born, and peace there will be on me the day I shall die, and the day I shall be raised up to life again.’(Chapter 19 Verse 34)

His life cycle is clearly born, die and than raised up to life as we all are after we have died on qiyamah.

A further Ayah proves that no one is removed from heaven anyways, even if we were to believe he was alive. This ayah is primarily showing that no matter what one says, it will only prove Isa(as) has died. Allah states:

Fatigue shall not touch them there, nor shall they ever be ejected therefrom.(Chapter 15 Verse 49)

Allah has even made it clear that one who is in heaven will never be removed, so even for those who sadly believe he is bodily in heavens cannot justify him coming back. Anyhow the Qur’an is clear on the death of Jesus(as). Here is a beautiful story from the life of Muhammad(Saw) which further shows no one will return from death:

Narrated Musa bin Ibrahim bin Kathir Al-Ansari:

“I heard Talhah bin Khirash say: ‘I heard Jabir bin ‘Abdullah saying: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) met me and said to me: ‘O Jabir! Why do I see you upset?’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! My father was martyred (on the Day of Uhud) leaving my family and debt behind.'” “He (ﷺ) said: ‘Shall I give you news of what your father met Allah with?'” He said: “But of course O Messenger of Allah!” He said: ‘Allah does not speak to anyone except from behind a veil, but He brought your father to speak to Him directly. He said: “[O My slave!] Do you wish that I give you anything?” He said: ‘O Lord! Give me life so that I may fight for You a second time.’ So the Lord [Blessed and Most High] said: ‘It has been decreed by Me that they shall not return (21:95).’ He said: “So this Ayah was revealed: Think not of those as dead who are killed in the way of Allah (3:169).(Tirmidhi, Volume 5, Book 44, Hadith #3010)

Some have often quoted the Ayahs which believe Isa(as) brought back the dead but we cannot accept an interpretation which contradicts all of these ayahs, rather should understand what the life Isa(as) gave really was. Allah states in regards to the Prophet Muhammad(saw) giving life as well. He States:

O ye who believe! respond to Allah, and the Messenger when he calls you that he may give you life, and know that Allah comes in between a man and his heart, and that He it is unto Whom you shall be gathered.(Chapter 8 Verse 25)

This is the same way Isa(as) gave life to people. It was spiritual life not physical bringing back the dead which would contradict what Allah has already stated.

Now some also quote this ayah which mentions a vision which some people have sadly taken literally:

Or like him who passed by a town which had fallen down upon its roofs, and exclaimed, ‘When will Allah restore it to life after its destruction?’ Then Allah caused him to die for a hundred years; then He raised him, and said: ‘How long hast thou remained in this state?’ He answered, ‘I have remained a day or part of a day.’ He said: ‘Nay, thou hast remained in this state for a hundred years. Now look at thy food and thy drink; they have not rotted. And look at thy ass. And We have done this that We may make thee a Sign unto men. And look at the bones, how We set them and then clothe them with flesh.’ And when this became clear to him, he said, ‘I know that Allah has the power to do all that He wills.’(Chapter 2 Verse 260)

“The preceding verse contained one illustration of how Allah brings His friends out of darkness into light. The present verse cites, as hinted in the words, or like him, another illustration of how He breathes new life into a people after they have fallen and become degraded.

The ruined town referred to in the verse is Jerusalem which was laid waste by Nebuchadnezzer. The person who, as the verse says, passed by it was Ezekiel, the Prophet; and the words, which had fallen down upon its roofs, hint that it was soon after its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar that Ezekiel passed by the town. Ezekiel was among the Israelite captives whom Nebuchadnezzar carried away to Babylon and who, in accordance with an ancient custom, were made to pass by the ruins of the two so that they might witness with their own eyes how their city had been laid in ruins by the conqueror. Ezekiel, who was a great well-wisher of his people, was immensely pained to see the ruins of the sacred city and pathetically asked God when the time would come when the city would be restored to life i.e, when its inhabitants, the children of Israel, would come back to it, rebuild it and make it prosperous once more. This prayer, it appears, was heard by God Who showed him in a vision that the restoration asked for would come in a hundred years.

The clause, then Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, does not mean that Ezekiel was actually made to die and then raised to life again. It was, in fact, a vision which Ezekiel saw (Ezek. 37). The Qur’an sometimes mentions scenes seen in a vision as if they had really happened, without stating that they were witnessed in a vision or a dream (e.g 12:5). What actually happened was that Ezekiel saw in a vision that he had died and remained dead for a hundred years and then had come back to life. As he was the representative of his people, his death signified the death of the Israelites. Thus God informed him through this vision that the children of Israel would remain in their state of captivity and lifelessness for a hundred years, after which a new life would be given to them and they would return to inhabit their sacred city. And this dream or vision actually turned out to be true. For Jerusalem was first invaded by Nebuchadnezzar in 597 BC and again in 587 BC when after a long siege the city was totally destroyed by his general in 586 BC. The city was re-built about 100 years after its destruction and thus the vision came to be true” (Five Volume Commentary of the Holy Qur’an Page 329)
This verse illustrates how Allah brings his friends out of darkness into light. The town which is being referred here is Jerusalem. The person who as the verse says passed by it was Ezekiel who was a prophet. The words :which had fallen down upon its roofs, hint that it was soon after its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar that Ezekiel passed by the town. Ezekiel was pained to see the ruins of the city and asked god when the time would come when the ruined city would be restored to life, meaning when its inhabitants would come back to it, re build it and make it like it was before. God showed him in a vision that the restoration would come in a hundred years.

The meaning of Allah caused him to die for a hundred years does not mean that Ezekiel was actually made to die then raised to life. It was a vision which Ezekiel saw (Ezekiel 37, not the entire bible is corrupt) The Qur’an has mentioned many visions and we always know visions are not taken literally. For example in Chapter 12 Verse 5:

Remember the time when Joseph said to his father, ‘O my father, I saw in a dream eleven stars and the sun and the moon, I saw them making obeisance to me.’(Chapter 12 Verse 5)

Ezekiel saw in a vision that he died, remained dead for a hundred years, and then came back. God informed him through this vision that the children of israel would remain in their condition for hundred years and after that he would see a new life which would be given to them and make them return. Ezekiel saw the vision around 586 BC. The city was re built about 100 years after thus the vision came true. The words i have remained a day or a part of a day are intended to mean that he did not know how long he was in this state for. Also used in same way in 18:20 (How long have you remained [here]?” They said, “We have remained a day or part of a day.” They said, “Your Lord is most knowing of how long you remained) and also 23:114. The clause i have remained a day or part of a day may also refer to the time Ezekiel slept or the time the vision was seen. If prophets were suppose to come back after death why would Allah not send Muhammad(saw) again physically in the same body as some non Ahmadi Muslims await Jesus(as)?

Many questions would indeed arise. Especially in regards to his age. Would he be 2000 years old? How can a 2000 year old person even walk? Allah’s laws of nature affect everyone and He has stated that never will be find a change in His way.

Different Appearances of Both Messiahs

Here is the description of the Messiah of the past sent to Bani Israel

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “I saw Moses, Jesus and Abraham (on the night of my Ascension to the heavens). Jesus was of red complexion, curly hair and a broad chest. Moses was of brown complexion, straight hair and tall stature as if he was from the people of Az-Zutt.” (Bukhari Volume 5, book 55, hadith 648)

Description of the Latter day Messiah(as)

Narrated `Abdullah:

The Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned the Masih Ad-Dajjal in front of the people saying, Allah is not one-eyed while Masih Ad-Dajjal is blind in the right eye and his eye looks like a bulging out grape. While sleeping near the Ka`ba last night, I saw in my dream a man of brown color the best one can see amongst brown color and his hair was long that it fell between his shoulders. His hair was lank and water was dribbling from his head and he was placing his hands on the shoulders of two men while circumambulating the Ka`ba. I asked, ‘Who is this?’ They replied, ‘This is Jesus, son of Mary.’ Behind him I saw a man who had very curly hair and was blind in the right eye, resembling Ibn Qatan (i.e. an infidel) in appearance. He was placing his hands on the shoulders of a person while performing Tawaf around the Ka`ba. I asked, ‘Who is this? ‘They replied, ‘The Masih, Ad-Dajjal.’ (sahih Bukhari Volume 4, book 55, Hadith #639)

There have been attempts to state for example there is a saying that the prophet did not mention Isa(as) being of reddish complexion ever but this is totally contradictory to the facts and nor can we attribute it to the sahaba as its clear all the descriptions of the messiah sent to Bani Israel always mention reddish complexion and all latter day descriptions mention brown. There is a clear reason to this and why the Prophet Muhammad(saw) had made this distinction.

Another beautiful point to notice is that all Muslims know that the one to revive Islam in the end times would be this messiah. We all know that Isa(as) was of Bani Israel but the Prophet(saw) made it clear that this person would be of the lineage of Salman Farsi(ra) meaning from the Persian Lineage as Ahmad(as) was

Narrated Abu Huraira:

While we were sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) Surat Al-Jumu’a was revealed to him, and when the Verse, “And He (Allah) has sent him (Muhammad) also to other (Muslims)…..’ (62.3) was recited by the Prophet, I said, “Who are they, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?” The Prophet (ﷺ) did not reply till I repeated my question thrice. At that time, Salman Al-Farisi was with us. So Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) put his hand on Salman, saying, “If Faith were at (the place of) Ath-Thuraiya (pleiades, the highest star), even then a man from these people (i.e. Salman’s folk) would attain it.” (Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Hadith #4897)

Imam Bukhari(ra) made it clear himself by arranging these Hadith in this order. The past Isa(As) together after the other and the latter day Messiah(as) ones right after the other. Its clear they refer to two different people or there would not have been two different personalities nor Would Muhammad(saw) ask who the second person was since he had already seen Jesus Son Of Mary many times in his dreams before.

Another interesting thing to note is that When Nabi(saw) mentions the Isa(As) of the past, he mentions his company with the dead which include Moses(As) since he was a prophet in the Ummah of Moses(as). But when Nabi(Saw) mentions the latter day Messiah(as) he mentions its company with dajjal rather then with the dead.

Now we know that firstly this refers to the latter day messiah(as) and we also know that Jesus(as) was not Persian. We also know that yes Ahmad(As) was of Persian lineage which clearly shows us that this Hadith refers to him. Some say that this refers to men but its clear that the Hadith is talking about Muhammad(Saw) coming in the latter days in spiritual sense which shows it is a man since he himself was a man. Even if someone says its men it is still fulfilled as we have khilafat. Secondly some say this was for Imam Abu Hanifa(ra) but by saying this the person is only disgracing Islam by claiming that Islam was already at the pleides during the time of Imam Abu Hanifa(ra). In reality it began to ascend to the pleides and reached it throughout 1000 years and was completely at the thuraya during the time of Ahmas(as).

Jesus(as) Protected From Persecution?

When Allah will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary, remember My favour upon thee and upon thy mother; when I strengthened thee with the Spirit of holiness so that thou didst speak to the people in the cradle and in middle age; and when I taught thee the Book and Wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when thou didst fashion a creation out of clay, in the likeness of a bird, by My command; then thou didst breathe into it a new spirit and it became a soaring being by My command; and thou didst heal the night-blind and the leprous by My command; and when thou didst raise the dead by My command; and when I restrained the children of Israel from putting thee to death when thou didst come to them with clear Signs; and those who disbelieved from among them said, ‘This is nothing but clear deception.’(Chapter 5 Verse 111)

The non Ahmadis try to quote this ayah to state that the word kafafu refers to the opponents touching Jesus(as) and could not put him on the cross however this is totally basis as well. In the Qur’an Allah has stated in regards to the Believers in Chapter 5 verse 12:

O ye who believe! remember Allah’s favour upon you when a people intended to stretch out their hands against you, but He withheld their hands from you; and fear Allah. And on Allah should the believers rely(Chapter 5 Verse 12)

In this verse Allah has used kaffa aiydiyahum which refers to “He withheld their hands from you” but its clear that there are many incidents of the lifetime of the Prophet(saw) where he was even wounded and injured many times. The word kaffa’an refers to Allah not letting the enemies of the Prophet’s plans succeed rather it is always Allah who’s plans are the best as He is Indeed the Best of Planners. This ayah was also misinterpreted by the non Ahmadi Muslims. It is an accepted fact that Isa(as) was put on the cross and no Ayah says otherwise. He was however not killed nor crucified which has shown that he did indeed succeed over his enemies and ended up as another prophet who was successful as they all are.

Again in chapter 5 verse 68 Allah has stated:

O Messenger! convey to the people what has been revealed to thee from thy Lord; and if thou do it not, thou hast not conveyed His Message at all. And Allah will protect thee from men. Surely, Allah guides not the disbelieving people.(Chapter 5 Verse 68)

This ayah as well guarantees that The Prophet(saw) would be protected from the evil men and Allah did indeed protect him but this does not mean the prophet would not be persecuted in any way whatsoever and is a total misconception.

Book, Wisdom And The Torah and the Gospel

And He will teach him the Book and the Wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel(Chapter 3 Verse 49)

This is yet another baseless attempt in try to prove that Isa(as) is alive. The Non Ahmadis try to claim that book and wisdom means the Holy Qur’an at all times, however this is not true. Allah states:

And [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allah took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], “Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom (Kitab and hikmah) and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him.” [ Allah ] said, “Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?” They said, “We have acknowledged it.” He said, “Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.”(Chapter 3 Verse 82)

So their claim for trying to use this to prove Isa(as) being alive is already proven as a failed attempt and would mean that all prophets are alive who have not seen the Qur’an as this ayah states Book and Wisdom for all of the prophets.

Allah also states in the Holy Qur’an that He granted the children of Abraham knowledge of the Book and Wisdom. The Holy Qur’an in Chapter 4 verse 54 states:

Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty? But we had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom.(Chapter 4 Verse 55)

Now everyone knows that Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and Joesph etc were never taught the Quran or hadith by Allah. If you claim kitab and hikmah means Quran and hadith which it does not, then all prophets including the family of Abraham should have been taught the Quran.

Then according to you all the prophets are alive in heavens and will return? Maybe even by the same teacher in the same class? Of course not. These are ridiculous claims. With your claim no prophet has died. All are alive and will come back to learn Quran and hadtih. This is clearly a belief the non Ahmadis do not even have so quoting such an argument will change their entire aqeedah on prophethood.

It is clear that al kitab and al hikmah when used together do not always refer to Quran and hadith. These two are given to every prophet of Allah. Allah only stated that Isa(as) was taught the Torah and the Gospel. He was not taught the Quran nor will he ever be taught the Quran. Quran itself says he was sent for the Children of Israel.

If Isa(As) was taught the Quran it would have to be abrogated wherever it claims he was sent to fulfill the mosaic law alone. It would also need to be aboraged wherever it claims he was sent to the children of Israel. Qur’an has no abrogation nor will it ever need to be changed. No Muslim can accept this. The only way the second coming of the Messiah(As) can teach the Quran is if he was raised from our ummah which he was and he fulfilled all tasks. On top of this you ignore over 30 verses proving Isa(as)’s death making it seem like Quran has contradictions nauzobilla. All just to say that Isa(as) is alive you go to the point where you make the Quran sound contradictory.

Even when we look at the most famous sunni kitab of tafseer called Tafsir Ibn Kathir, he himself has stated:

الْكِتَـبَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ

(the Book and Al-Hikmah). It appears that the `Book’ the Ayah mentioned here refers to writing. We explained the meaning of Al-Hikmah in the Tafsir of Surat Al-Baqarah.

(the Tawrah and the Injil). The Tawrah is the Book that Allah sent down to Musa, son of `Imran, while the Injil is what Allah sent down to `Isa, son of Maryam, peace be upon them

Even he has not stated this refers to the Qur’an.

Speak From the Middle Age?

‘And he shall speak to the people in the cradle and when of middle age, and he shall be of the righteous.’(Chapter 3 Verse 47)

Non Ahmadis have tried to use this ayah to state that Allah has said that Isa(As) will speak in the cradle and in the middle age, but because he went to the heavens, he was unable to speak during the middle age. This is just another misunderstood ayah which most non Ahmadis have tried using, but in reality there is no basis to it. Firstly we do not believe that Isa(as) was raised to the heavens and I have proven through over 30 ayahs so he did indeed die a natural death after speaking in the middle age as well. Secondly the word kahla does not even refer to the old age rather an age of maturity.

In the famous dictionary Al Munjid it states:

The period of the word Kahla is from the age of 30 years to the age of fifty.

In Muntakhitabul Arabiyya it has been stated that kahla is a man of age twenty or thirty.

The word old man has been used in the Qur’an in chapter 11 verse 73 and the word used is sheikh rather than kahla. Secondly I will like to repeat once again that this ayah has no basis to prove the life of Isa(as) as he did indeed reach a age of 120 as ahadith state which I have also proven.

Prophets Will Not Be Witnesses?

Since the non Ahmadi Muslims have no replies to the Qur’anic arguments the Ahmadi Muslims bring forth, they begin to use a new argument which is totally misinterpreted and out of context. It is sad that the non Ahmadi Muslims believe that all of the Prophets will become liars and become mushriks as well , God forbid. How can they believe a prophet would lie to Allah?

The ayah they quote is as follows:

Think of the day when Allah will assemble the Messengers and say, ‘What reply was made to you?’ They will say, ‘We have no knowledge, it is only Thou Who art the Knower of hidden things.’(Chapter 5 Verse 110)

This ayah is totally used out of context and is misinterpreted. This ayah is actually referring to the hearts and minds of the people. The prophets will admit the rejection they faced but will plead to their ignorance in regards to the hearts of the people. They would not know what in reality was in the hearts and minds of the people and whether they wholeheartedly accepted the prophet. This shows that they cannot take the authority of deciding whether the person is going to heaven or hell as they are not completely sure. Allah has made it clear that the Prophets will indeed bear witness against their people. Allah states:

And how will it fare with them when We shall bring a witness from every people, and shall bring thee as a witness against these!(Chapter 4 Verse 42)

This ayah has clearly shown us that the Prophets will indeed bear witness against their people. Furthermore, this reply of the prophets is made in the beginning when Allah questions them in a general way, but the evidence will indeed come after when Allah calls upon the prophets to give the required evidence. Allah has all of the knowledge in regards to the response of the Prophets but He will still ask the Prophets the question.

This ayah is also referring to the reply the prophets were given as a whole meaning after they had left the world. This is also a reason they say only Allah is aware of all of the hidden things because all prophets died and were not able to see the true response of the people as many went astray after they died.

It is also extremely important to point out that one who denies this tafsir is denying Ibn Abbas(ra) who has had the same view on this ayah. It is stated in Tafsir Ibn Kathir, one of the greatest tafsir of the non Ahmadi Muslims, under this ayah:

Ali bin Abi Talhah said that Ibn `Abbas commented on the Ayah,

(On the Day when Allah will gather the Messengers together and say to them: “What was the response you received (from men to your teaching)” They will say: “We have no knowledge, verily, only You are the Knower of all that is hidden.”) “They will say to the Lord, Most Honored, `We have no knowledge beyond what we know, and even that, You have more knowledge of them than us.” This response is out of respect before the Lord, Most Honored, and it means, we have no knowledge compared to Your encompassing knowledge. Therefore, our knowledge only grasped the visible behavior of these people, not the secrets of their hearts. You are the Knower of everything, Who has encompassing knowledge of all things, and our knowledge compared to Your knowledge is similar to not having any knowledge at all, for

(only You are the Knower of all that is hidden.)

Now one should also remember that Ibn Abbas(ra) was one of the greatest companions of Muhammad(saw) and the Prophet(saw) himself prayed to Allah in regards to his knowledge of the Qur’an, that Oh Allah teach him the Qur’an. The most authentic tafsir of Ibn Abbas(ra) comes from Ali bin Abi Talhah as this reference has. This reference can be found under the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir under Surah Maidah Verse 109 (This same Ayah being discussed).

Most people have quoted this ayah for Isa(as) as an attempt to show that he would not be a witness but this is totally false. Allah states:

And there is none among the People of the Book but will believe in it before his death; and on the Day of Resurrection, he (Jesus) shall be a witness against them —(Chapter 4 Verse 160)

Allah has already clearly told us that on the Day of Resurrection Jesus(as) will be a witness against them. This ayah also proves that Isa(As) has died as it states that it will be the day of resurrection where he witnesses them, not before that.

Jesus(as) Cannot Be “Touched”?

They have indeed disbelieved who say, ‘Surely, Allah is none but the Messiah, son of Mary.’ Say, ‘Who then has any power against Allah, if He desire to bring to naught the Messiah, son of Mary, and his mother and all those that are in the earth?’ And to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and what is between them. He creates what He pleases; and Allah has power to do all things.(Chapter 5 Verse 18)

This verse in no way whatsoever has anything to prove that Jesus (as) is alive. Allah is simply replying to the Christians who consider Isa(As) to be a god since he has no abilities to protect himself from divine wrath. Since Allah has the ability to give Isa(As) death as He has throughout the Qur’an, Isa(as) cannot be god as he does not have the qualities of our Creator. This ayah has no proof for the life of Isa(as) at all and if one tries to claim it means Isa(as) is alive they have to say his mother is alive as well. Its sad that in today’s day and age it is Muslims themselves who are twisting ayahs of Tauheed to prove the life of a prophet who Qur’an says has died.

Sign of The Hour?

But verily, he was a sign of the Hour. So have no doubt about it, but follow me. This is the right path.(Chapter 4 Verse 63)

The second part of the verse says so have no doubt about it referring to the hour and it is obvious he is addressing the disbelievers that after witnessing this specific sign how can they possibly have any doubts in regards to the hour? This verse is a sign for disbelievers. If your argument had any basis then on day of judgement everyone who saw the Quran and rejected it can simply say no we did not witness the sign of the hour so we have doubts and do not believe. If the hour has not come how can they believe it? and be expected by Allah not to doubt it?

Secondly if innahu referred to him coming Allah would not say So have no doubt but follow me right after the statement. If it was for Isa(as) Allah would have said but follow him or obey him but no he referred to himself .This sign of hour refers to the Quran! the greatest miracle. It spiritually gives life to the dead and Allah tells us this In chapter 25 verse 50:

That We may thereby give life to a dead land, and give it for drink to Our creation — cattle and men in great numbers.(Chapter 25 Verse 50)

In Tafsir Mu’alimut Tanzil, it is stated:

قال الحسن و جماعة انہ یعنی ان القرآن لعلم للساعة

“Hadrat Imam Hasan (ra) and a community of people state that
Innahu infers that the Holy Qur’an is the Sign of the Hour.”

Further in Tafsir Jami’ul Bayan it states”

“Some have said that the pronoun in this verse refers to the Holy Qur’an.”

In Tafisr Majma’ul Bayan it states:

و قیل ان معناہ ان القران لدلیل للساعة لانہ آخر الكتاب

“Some have said that the meaning of this verse is that the Holy
Qur’an is a proof of the imminent resurrection, because it is the last book.”

Holy prophet(saw) is also a sign of the hour and this can also possibly refer to him. Allah tells us in Chapter 8 verse 25:

O ye who believe! respond to Allah, and the Messenger when he calls you that he may give you life, and know that Allah comes in between a man and his heart, and that He it is unto Whom you shall be gathered(Chapter 8 Verse 25)

Innahu can indeed refer to Jesus(as) as well as Mirza Ghulam Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) has stated in Hamamatul Bushra and Ijaz-e-Ahmadi. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) explained that Jesus(as) was a sign of the hour for the people who rejected the day of resurrection. The Sadducees did not believe in resurrection and were a Jewish sect which is proven by bible mark 12:28 explains their reply to jesus. Sa’ah is also used for punishment so Jesus was a sign for children of Israel due to the disobedience and persecution towards Jesus

Here is the quote from Mirza Ghulam Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) from Hammamatul Bushra:

“Let it be known that in relation to the Messiah (as), Allah the Almighty states

Innahu la‘ilmul-lis-sa‘ati [i.e., Verily he is a sign of the Hour] and not Innahu sayakunu

‘ilman lis-sa‘ati [i.e., Verily he shall be a sign of the Hour]. Hence, this verse indicates that he was a sign of the hour for the very reason that he practically possessed that sign within him, and not because that sign would be proven true in his person later on in time; and the reason he was a sign was because he was born without a father. The detail is that a Jewish sect known as the Sadducees disbelieved in the resurrection. As such, Allah informed them through the words of various Prophets that a boy would be born from among their people without a father; and he would be a Sign for them to establish the truth of the day of resurrection. It is to this very fact that the verse ‘Verily, he is a sign of the Hour’ refers to. Similarly the verse ‘And we made him a sign,’alludes to the fact that we would make him[i.e., Jesus] a sign for the Sadducee people.”

Even if one was to use the name of Jesus(as) with Ilmun in its infinitive form as its being used in this ayah, it would only mean that Jesus(as) was a prophet of God who had knowledge of the day of resurrection, nothing more.

People of The Book Would Believe?

And there is none among the People of the Book but will believe in it before his death; and on the Day of Resurrection, he (Jesus) shall be a witness against them —(Chapter 4 Verse 160)

This verse is one of the ayahs in the Qur’an which has such a confusion on many non Ahmadis sadly but this can easily be cleared up once the Qur’an is read in context. This verse in context and many other ayahs in context as well need to be read to understand this ayah. Firstly the pronoun it refers to the false belief that Jesus(as) died on the cross so this signifies that till their death the Jews and the Christians will believe that Isa(as) died on the cross as this is the creed of their belief. If Jesus(as) didn’t die on the cross both the faith of the Christians and Jews are in danger. Some Sunnis have referred to qabla mauthihi referring to Isa(As) but this is simply ridiculous for many reasons. Firstly let it be made clear that Isa(as) was successful in his mission and was granted a clear victory as all other prophets were. Having victory was never the entire world accepting the prophet as there has always been a party of people who reject the messengers of Allah.

Now let’s read this ayah in context. It is revealed right after the ayah which states that Messiah Son of Mary was not killed nor crucified. This is continuing onto the misconception that Isa(As) was killed on the cross. The surah and ayahs in context show the faults of the Jews and Christians it would not make sense to out of nowhere state that all of the Christians and Jews would become better then entire mankind by accepting the prophet sent to them. So the hi mentioned in la yu minanna bihi refers to the Ahlul Kitab and is referring to their confusion of believing that Isa(As) died on the cross. The Qabla mauthi does not refer to Jesus(as) rather to the person of the ahlul kitab. This shows that all of them will believe he died on the cross since without this both faiths are in vain.

Now here are some points one has to consider. The ayah does not exclude anyone from the people of the book. So according to the non Ahmadi interpretation all have to believe in Jesus(as) before the death but how about the millions who have died already without accepting Jesus(as)? Will they all come back to life and accept Jesus(As) even though Qur’an says the dead do not come back to life physically? How would the non Ahmadis reply to this? The Arabic puts together the words in and min which is referred to as hasr in Arabic grammar and includes all. No one from the people of the book can be excluded. The ayah states “And there is none among the People of the Book” so how can you justify the millions who rejected Isa(As) and have already died and are dying as a type? Was this a false saying by Allah God forbid?

Secondly the ayah right after states that “And on the day of resurrection, he (Jesus) shall be a witness against them” This shows us that it will be on the day of resurrection where Jesus(as) will be a witness against them not before. Secondly it states that he would be a witness against them. Why would Jesus(as) be against them if all will accept him?

Now the biggest complication with their interpretation of this ayah is it created contradiction in the Qur’an. This book cannot have any contradictions. Allah has stated:

Will they not, then, meditate upon the Qur’an? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much disagreement.(Chapter 4 verse 83)

The Qur’an is the greatest book and has no contradictions but sadly the non Ahmadi interpretation causes many contradictions by claiming all will accept Jesus(as) and become Muslim. Here are some clear ayahs that prove that firstly only a few Jews were made to accept, and secondly that the disbelievers will remain till day of judgment. Christians and Jews are in fact both mentioned by name.

Then, because of their breaking of their covenant, and their denial of the Signs of Allah, and their seeking to kill the Prophets unjustly, and their saying: ‘Our hearts are wrapped in covers,’ — nay, but Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not but little —(Chapter 4 Verse 156)

We were just speaking in context. Now I ask the non Ahmadis whether they have read the ayah of the Jews and Christians believing in it in context? Just four ayahs before Allah has made it clear that from the Jews they do not believe but little. A minority of them believe. Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief which caused only a little of them believe. This leaves no room left for one to claim the entire mankind will follow a prophet whom Qur’an says has already died.

The next ayah is chapter 3 verse 56 which despite proving the death of Isa(as) also proves that the disbelievers would remain till the day of judgment:

When Allah said, ‘O Jesus, I will cause thee to die a natural death and will exalt thee to Myself, and will clear thee from the charges of those who disbelieve, and will place those who follow thee above those who disbelieve, until the Day of Resurrection; then to Me shall be your return, and I will judge between you concerning that wherein you differ. (Chapter 3 verse 56)

Allah makes it clear that he will place those who follow Isa(as) above those who disbelieve until the day of resurrection which shows us once again that disbelievers will remain till the day of judgment.

Now here are two ayahs which mention both the Christians and the Jews by name, that they will indeed exist till the day of judgement:

And from those also who say, ‘We are Christians,’ We took a covenant, but they too have forgotten a good part of that with which they were exhorted. So We have caused enmity and hatred among them till the Day of Resurrection. And Allah will soon let them know what they have been doing.(Chapter 5 verse 15)

This ayah has clearly stated that Allah has taken a covenant from the Christians and has caused enmity and hatred among them till the day of resurrection. Now for them to have enmity and hatred they have to exist so how can one say they will have hate and enmity till day of judgment but not be in existence? This is another contradiction which the non Ahmadi interpretation causes which cannot be accepted.

Again Allah states:

And the Jews say, ‘The hand of Allah is tied up.’ Their own hands shall be tied up and they shall be cursed for what they say. Nay, both His hands are wide open; He spends how He pleases. And what has been sent down to thee from thy Lord will most surely increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief. And We have cast among them enmity and hatred till the Day of Resurrection. Whenever they kindle a fire for war, Allah extinguishes it. And they strive to create disorder in the earth, and Allah loves not those who create disorder. (Chapter 5 verse 65)

This ayah is also really clear and states that in regards to the Jews Allah has caused enmity and hatred till the day of resurrection. Once again Jews have to be present for there to be hatred and animosity amongst them. The verse next ayah Allah states:

And if the People of the Book had believed and been righteous, We would surely have removed from them their evils and We would surely have admitted them into Gardens of Bliss.(Chapter 5 Verse 66)

Allah has clearly stated that if the People of the book Had believed and been righteous. This shows that they will not believe till qiyamah nor be righteous. How can a Muslim possibly accept a view of a verse which contradicts over 40 ayahs of the Holy Qur’an?

Again Allah has stated:

And those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt about it until the Hour comes suddenly upon them or there comes to them the punishment of a destructive day.

This ayah has also told us that they would disbelieve until the hour comes upon and that suddenly upon them or there comes to them the punishment of a destructive day.

Allah Raised Jesus(as) To Himself

And their saying, ‘We did kill the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah;’ whereas they slew him not, nor crucified him, but he was made to appear to them like one crucified; and those who differ therein are certainly in a state of doubt about it; they have no definite knowledge thereof, but only follow a conjecture; and they did not convert this conjecture into a certainty; On the contrary, Allah exalted him to Himself. And Allah is Mighty, Wise.(Chapter 4 Verses 158-159)

Firstly, it is clear that in no way does the fact that Isaas was not killed or crucified, suggest that heas is alive in the heavens. This same ayah can apply to even the Holy Prophetsaw who was neither killed nor crucified and was also raised. This applies to many prophets and many righteous people who have passed. They were neither killed nor crucified and were indeed raised by Allah, who is Al-Rafi, the One Who Exalts. However, this does not mean that any Prophet is alive in the heavens physically.

Some have tried to use the words “wa lakin shubbiha lahum” to mean that another person’s face was switched with the face of Isa(as) who was killed, while Isa(as) was raised to the heavens. This once again has no basis in the Qur’an nor do any Arabic dictionaries ever support such a meaning attributed to the words.

The Jews wanted to crucify Isa(as) meaning put him to death on the cross, to prove to the public that Isa(as) was God Forbid a false prophet as Deuteronomy Chapter 21 Verses 21-23 state in regards to the ones who die on the cross. This was the plan of the Jews to show that Isa(as) was God forbid, a false prophet. Such an interpretation that another person’s face’s likeness was put onto Isa(as) and that person was killed instead of Isa(as), is totally unacceptable for many reasons. Firstly, the Jews wanted to show the people that Isa(as) would die on the cross to prove him false, so if another man died in his place, with his face, the people would have still seen Isa(as), and to them he would remain a false prophet, God Forbid. Some believe that it’s because Isa(as) was going to be put on the cross, Allah decided that his prophet should not be persecuted, and therefore was raised to the heavens. This again is against the teachings of the Qur’an and contradicts the reaction the other prophets received from their people. The Holy Prophet(saw) faced a lot of persecution in Ta’if and his feet would be drenched in blood. His(saw)s reply was always to pray to Allah for protection as did Isa(as), which is the reason Allah did not let him die on the cross.

If we were to assume that Allah did indeed put the looks of Isa(as) onto someone else, Allah would be accused for many things against his way. Firstly one would say that Allah secretly raised a prophet of Allah from the earth to the heavens, contradicting the Qur’an and removing his prophet from his mission, in fear of the Jews who defeated him. How can a sincere Muslims after all of the proof in regards to the death of Jesus(as) present in the Qur’an and the Ahadith, believe that Allah was afraid of the Jews and they had defeated him? The Qur’an has made it clear that the Prophets always fulfill their missions in their lifetime on earth and are persecuted, but protected by Allah. Secondly, why would an innocent person have to die for no reason? Thirdly Allah has made it clear in the Qur’an that we should not alter ourselves yet the non Ahmadi Muslims have put such an allegation on Allah, that He himself altered his creation, God Forbid!

The story in regards to the face of Isa(as) switching is not Islamic.

Firstly Ibn Ishaq on the authority of a Christian convert who is not even narrated with his name has related a similar story but has given the name of the disciple and named him Sergus, meaning one unknown so this is israliyyat and is not from Islam. There are many contradictions within this narration itself as many have quoted the name tityanus as well. How can we accept such a saying? Now this also mocks at our creator. Firstly it tries to state that the Jews God forbid defeated Allah and his messenger and forced Allah to remove his prophet from his mission because he was unable to handle it. This tries to state that Isa(as) did not have faith in Allah and was too scared of the Jews. Was a prophet ever scared enough of his opponents where Allah had to remove his prophet from his mission? Never has this happened.

There are many narrations presented by tabari all contradicting each other and all from israliyyat. Some say it was Judas who got the image of Jesus onto him and it was Judas who died. Tabari has given two traditions which support the first opinion of Judas but there is a second tradition where Jesus asked which one wants paradise for his soul today, and a faithful servant said he wants to who was crucified, while Jesus was raised. Then after this it was when tabari used 9 narrations for this second opinion. Clearly these narrations have no basis in Islam and also attack the character of Allah and the Quran

The Word Rafa

Let us now analyze the next ayah where Allah states:

On the contrary, Allah exalted him to Himself. And Allah is Mighty, Wise.(Chapter 4 Verse 159)

Now we know that Allah saved Isa(As) from the attempted crucifixion of the Jews and did not let him receive an accursed death,as he was indeed a true prophet of Allah. This next verse tells us that “Allah exalted him to Himself. And Allah is the Mighty, The Wise”

Whenever we look at the word Rafa’a and it is used for a human being this will never ever in the history of the Arabic lexicons mean that the physical body has been raised to the heavens, rather always refer to the elevation of his status when Allah causes it.

For example Allah states in regards to Prophet Idris(as):

And We exalted him to a lofty station.(Chapter 19 Verse 58)

Here are more examples from the Qur’an and every single time, Allah speaks of causing rafa’a on a human being, it is spiritual:

The word rafa’a in ahadith is also always used for spiritual exaltation and never physical raise. Here are some beautiful ahadith which further prove the point which is being made:

It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said:

“On the day of Uhud, the people ran away, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was in one position among twelve men of the Ansar, one of whom was Talhah bin ‘Ubaidullah. He said: ‘Who will face the people?’ Talhah said: ‘I will.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Stay where you are.’ One of the Ansar said: ‘I will, O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’ He said: ‘You (go ahead).’ So he fought until he was killed. Then he turned and saw the idolators. He said: ‘Who will face the people?’ Talhah said: ‘I will’. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Stay where you are.’ One of the Ansar said: ‘I will, O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’ He said: ‘You (go ahead).’ So he fought until he was killed. This carried on, and each man of the Ansar went out to face them and fought like the one before him, and was killed, until only the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and Talhah bin ‘Ubaidullah were left. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Who will face the people?’ Talhah said: ‘I will.’ So Talhah fought like the eleven before him, until his hand was struck, and his fingers were cut off, and he exclaimed in pain. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘If you had said Bismillah (in the Name of Allah), the angels would have raised you with the people looking on.’ Then Allah drove back the idolators.”( Sunan an-Nasa’i 3149)

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives Allah adds to his respect, and the one who shows humility Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).( Sahih Muslim 2588)

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said:

“When praying at night (Qiyamul-Lail), the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say between the two prostrations: ‘Rabbighfir li warhamni wajburni warzuqni warfa’ni (O Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, improve my situation, grant me provision and raise me in status).’” (Ibn Maja book 1, vol 5, hadith 898)

As a Muslim in every namaz we ask Allah to raise us but did we ever see someone be raised Physically? Of course not and neither do we ever ask for a physical raise.

Another hadith states:

When a servant shows humility, Allah elevates him to the seventh

heaven.”( Kanzul-‘Ummal)

This hadith has stated heaven but even this is not taken literal and its clear that raf’a is indeed spiritual in the Qur’an and in the ahadith. Never physical body raise when Allah is causing the rafa.

Even when we look in the Arabic lexicons the same story is found. Rafa’a is always spiritual.

In Aqrabul Mawarid it is written “He was elevated to the king, i.e. he was brought close or became his intimate”

In lisanal Arab it is stated: The name rafi is among the names of allah because he elevates a believer with good fortune and his friends with nearness. The word rafa means to bring one thing close to another.

It is an attribute of Allah, that he does rafa of the believers. Its been his law since the start of creation and never was it bodily.

Allah has made it clear in the Qur’an that Messengers are given rafa. Some over the others.

These Messengers have We exalted, some of them above others: among them there are those to whom Allah spoke; and some of them He exalted by degrees of rank. And We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs and strengthened him with the Spirit of holiness. And if Allah had so willed, those that came after them would not have fought with one another after clear Signs had come to them; but they did disagree. Of them were some who believed, and of them were some who disbelieved. And if Allah had so willed, they would not have fought with one another; but Allah does what He desires.(Chapter 2 verse 254)

Its also interesting to note that Allah decided to mention Isa(as) right after speaking about rafa of the ranks. Allah Has clearly stated that the rafa is of status and in rank.

Some also claim that Allah has used Illalah. This also does not ever mean physical ascension according to the Qur’an so is a misinterpreted point by the non Ahmadis. Illalah is basically the turning of attention towards Allah or the spiritual return of the soul.It has been used in the Qur’an many times for Example:

And he said, ‘I am going to my Lord, Who will guide me.(Chapter 37 verse 100)

And Lot believed him; and Abraham said, ‘I take refuge with my Lord; surely He is the Mighty, the Wise.’(Chapter 29 verse 27)

And thou, O soul at peace! Return to thy Lord well pleased with Him and He well pleased with thee.(Chapter 89 verse 28-29)

A third point to be made clear is that according to the Qur’an there are many Ayahs that prove to us that Allah is not confined to the heavens nor does he have a direction which he is confined to. Its clear that Isa(as) was raised but raised in his honor. He was not a false prophet and Allah removed all the misconceptions by making sure he did not die on the cross and Allah gave him a natural death as stated in the explanation of chapter 3 verse 56. Here are some clear ayahs showing that Allah is everywhere so if someone does insist that it was a physical raise and wants to go against the words of Allah, then in his belief Isa(as) must be everywhere as well.

Allah has made it clear that He is everywhere. Here are a few verses which prove this fact.

And when My servants ask thee about Me, say: ‘I am near. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he prays to Me. So they should hearken to Me and believe in Me, that they may follow the right way.’ (Chapter 2 verse 187)

Now Allah makes it clear of how near he is as well in the Qur’an, since He knew what would happen to the Muslims and how even they would become like the Christians and end up confining God like they have. Allah states:

And assuredly, We have created man and We know what his physical self whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than even his jugular vein. (50:17)

Here are some more Ayahs that make it clear that Allah is indeed everywhere:

And He is Allah, the God, both in the heavens and in the earth. He knows your inside and your outside. And He knows what you earn.(Chapter 6 Verse 4)

He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six periods, then He settled Himself on the Throne. He knows what enters the earth and what comes out of it, and what comes down from heaven and what goes up into it. And He is with you wheresoever you may be. And Allah sees all that you do.(Chapter 57 Verse 5)

To Allah belong the East and the West; so withersoever you turn, there will be the face of Allah. Surely, Allah is Bountiful, All- Knowing.(Chapter 2 Verse 116)

. It is quite sad that the non Ahmadi Muslims try to only interpret rafa for Isa(as) differently, however say that it is always a spiritual raise when used for others. This is a clear misunderstanding of there’s, and a point which is in contradiction to the Qur’an. An important Qur’anic ayah to notice is in Chapter 17. Allah states:

‘Or thou have a house of gold or thou ascend up into heaven; and we will not believe in thy ascension until thou send down to us a book that we can read.’ Say, ‘Holy is my Lord! I am not but a man sent as a Messenger.’And nothing has prevented men from believing when the guidance came to them save that they said, ‘Has Allah sent a man as a Messenger?’(Chapter 17 Verses 94-95)

This verse is so clear and beautiful that there should really be no misconception left of Jesus(as) going physically to the heavens. The unbelievers asked the Prophet Muhammad(saw) for a sign to prove his truthfulness and the sign they asked was for him to physically go to heaven but his reply is clear. He has shown us that it was not the habit of Allah to transport an earthly body to paradise by stating that Holy is my Lord, I am not but a man sent as a messenger. If we accept that Isa(As) physically went to the heavens then the response of the Prophet(saw) would not be accepted rather the Christians and others who are against us can use this as a huge allegation. Secondly it would also mean Isa(As) is not a man nor a messenger so we should be careful by stating that Isa(as) is alive after all of this clear proof has been given to us by the Imam of the Age, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) of Qadian. This Ayah has clearly shown us that Allah and the Prophet Muhammad(saw) are against a Physical Ascension.
